2012 “12 Towers Ocean SUP Race” wrap up

Hi all,

Well what an epic event that was played out for the 2012 “12 Towers Ocean SUP Race”. True down wind conditions, big swell, plenty of sunshine and a nasty beach break to test the nerves of the 61 starters.

There were several fantastic battles being fought throughout the field. In particular the contest between Australian Representative Angela Jackson and Champion Sydney sider Terrene Black, this was fought to the line with the southerner taking the honours.

Up front saw 10 x World Paddle Board Champion Jamie Mitchell and World Champion Outrigger Travis Grant get away from the pack early with a seesaw wrestle with Trav sneaking away in the final kilometre of the race.

Third, fourth and fifth place getters in the Open Men 12’6” division had their own great contest with their lead changing multiple times over the 13km course. Plenty of reports have surfaced since of some excellent combat in all board and age classes.

To all of whom competed or gave the race their all, congratulations! It was some massive strength to get to the start line and an even bigger one to hit the finish. Everyone should be proud of their efforts.

To the events sponsors and supporters;

a huge thank you for all of your support.

We registered 66 competitors, we marshalled 61 and saw 56 cross the finish line. It was incredibly tough going in all aspects of the race. For those who didn’t get to the Burleigh Heads finish line, there is nothing to be disappointed about as the kick in swell was taking no prisoners, but well done for your efforts!

A few people I would like to make mention of and one in particular to great sportsman like manner is Simone Horsefield, who piggy backed Sondra Purser in when S.P. paddled on to a rogue monster to come out second best. With her leggy snapped, she was left floundering way out the back when Simone grabbed her on board her 14 footer and rode a bomb board rescue style through to the shore break. As it turned out, Simone was the one of more concern as she was screaming to Sondra to tell her when she could open her eyes again!

I marshalled all competitors at 10:30am for an 11am start giving everyone 30 minutes to make their way to the starting buoys. Cathy Tanner and Terriane Palmer must be praised for their commitment and dedication on trying to tame the shorey at North Kirra. Now these two girls have never paddled in the ocean before and the heavy waves were relentless and so were they. Please take time to consider this as I was watching these two and there was no way they were going to give up. Wave after wave pounded them and they still jumped back on for another go. Unfortunately time stole their first race from them and also Cathy’s “Quick blade Paddle”. What a fantastic effort girls!

Congratulations to all category winners and place getters, all competitors, organisers and everyone who gave it a go!

What a way to start the year!

Cheers
Peasey

January 2012 wrap up - Member Sign On and Demo Day

SUPSA committee would like to extend a warm welcome to all past and new members for the 2012 season of Stand up Paddling.

Sunday January 15th was set as the opening day for Club Membership Registration. And despite the glum weather of slight drizzle and the occasional down pour, we saw close to 100 people over the duration, line the banks of the mighty Currumbin, enjoying a full array of boards that were on hand to demonstrate.

Huge thanks goes to those who showcased their board brands and associated SUP products. In no particular order, SUPSA sincerely appreciates the time and generosity to the following individuals and businesses.

To all of the SUPSA Members who helped in the organisation and the days’ proceedings, your efforts are very much appreciated. In particular Steve “Richo” Richardson, the Pied Piper of sign on and Andrew “Hammo” Hamilton on the tongs. I believe he still smells like sausages!

This very successful Sign On and Demo Day saw SUPSA joining with quite a few new members. 45 in fact, (66 sign on for the day) which is an amazing figure having only organised this event 2 weeks out from the day. Our biggest gain was in the form of the Family Membership category. And why not when it is only $70 for a Family Membership to join in the fun of what this sport has to offer.

And now with a full season scheduled of events, the reputation and community awareness of Stand up Paddling will now begin to bare all!

This is just the beginning of a huge year for SUPSA, and if our Sign On and Demo Day is something to go by, we’re definitely in for some treats!

To the new 2012 SUPSA Committee, I personally welcome you all to the beginning of an exciting year.

To all of our renewing and latest members, the SUPSA Committee will endeavour to inform you regularly of happenings and activities pertaining to the SUPSA Club and external events and promotions.

See you all at the “12 Towers Ocean SUP Race”.

March 2011 wrap up

Sea Street Tugun has become a regular haunt for the SUPSA Club of late, and has yet to rarely disappoint. With this the first SUPSA Club Round of SUP Surfing of 2011, strategically scheduled when the Quiksilver Pro circus is in town, we were sure to pick off some swell, which has been the norm for the past few years. As per expected, waves of plenty, walls of opportunity but the squalling rain patches didn’t dampen the SUPSA extravaganza. The only disappointing thing was the crowd attendance where they had them busting out in the southern corner, as we usually have them flocking!

Although not outdone in the surfing stakes, a huge roll-up of 29 SUP punters graced the white sands of “Sea Hawk Land” producing the excitement and awesome performances that would have had Kelly 10 times on his toes. Kelly did happen to send his apologies for his absence as he had made a prior scheduled arrangement!

Movements flowed on nicely with the early morning set-up, and heats rolled on by like a twister in a trailer park. With all thanks to the superb organisation of a head sore and gut-full of free Quiky Pro lager, Vice President Richo. No T left un-crossed or an I left without a dot. This man is a perfectionist which is also evident in his surfing. Be wary if you draw him in a heat!

Heat 1, round 1 got underway with great performances from “Big” Greg Sunderland and Scotty P over Johnno and Teatree in that order.

Heat 2 round 1 saw Richo stand up out over Hammo, Stevie “Streets” Guyer and Mick Peel. Can’t think of anything to go with peel!

Heat 3 round 1 had “Froth Maestro” Mark Horsefield get up on Rowdy, in his first SUP surfing comp, Matt “a shade of Green Line” Prior and Jay “Out of the” Gates.

Heat 4 round 1 with the “Lennox Loiterer” Noel Graham edging out Von Piros, Steve “No Solar in me” Walker then Pete “Chicken” Fowler.

Heat 5 round 1 gave new member Geoff Barden a nice start above Scotty Shambrook and Brett “nothing but powder” Williams.

Heat 6 round 1 had one of the favourites in Paul “Flatulence” Jackson, pipping out “the Prez” Pease, new member Nick Green and Hinzy in that order.

Heat 7 round 1 of the fillies got underway in what was seen as the best conditions of the day, and the girls didn’t let the opportunity slip by. East Coast wanderer Sondra Purser strung together the goods on all score cards. With a 1.5 point buffer over Angie “said she couldn’t surf” Jackson, surprising us all with the highest wave score of the girls and equal highest (Richo) of the day in second place. Ali and Jenny not out done with a fantastic display of surfing finished respectively with all girls securing scores over 12 points out a possible 20. Well done to all!

Repechage 1 of round 2 saw Johnno narrowly ahead of Greeny, Peely, Teatree and Stevie G in that order.

Repechage 2 of round 2 was decided from a count back which saw Pete Fowler over Matty Prior, Hinzy, Gatesy and Bretto.
Semi-final 1 had a full bag with Ali and Jen getting wet for a second time. Geoff took it out quite convincingly with some solid back foot moves. He managed to shut out Mark Horsefield, surprising us all that the coffee connoisseur gets his Sup vertical. Mark also going through to the final with Johnno and Hammo being Final casualties.

Semi-final 2 housed the big guns of Noel Graham getting on top of Jacko who were both on fire. Surely one of these guys to feature on the next SUPWORLD cover! Scotty Shambrook, Sunders then Rowdy Rowdy Rowdy were eliminated but all still threw down some filthy performances!

Semi-final 3 saw the conditions deteriorate with the southerly blustering about 30 knots, evident from them all paddling on the bellies! Peasey, still happy to favour his forehand and snavel the left hander’s, got the nod over Richo and both progressing to the Final. Scotty P, Pete Fowler and Steveo fought it out to the red and all just came up short of a finals berth.

So a Final was drawn and hinted at pencilling in for Series 2 of the SUPSA SUP Surfing Champs in April, as conditions had become ridiculously “crap”. The wind had kicked in and blew harder than swinging a brick bat on a tight rope. So after pondering over whether to try and conjure up a winner from both on a count back system resulting in 3 different winners, the decision to hold over the Men’s and Women’s Final til next month had been the more sensible assessment. As it stands, Noel Graham, Geoff Barden, Paul Jackson, Troy Pease, Steve Richardson and Mark Horsefield will be the first heat of the day to decide the March results. As with the girls of Sondra Purser, Angie Jackson, Ali Fullager and Jen Johnston will field the second heat. (Sondra and Angie leaving after their heat as they thought they only surf once) And hoping that all can make the April Comp!

Thanks to all who helped set up early and cleaned up. To the SUPSA Committee, once again well done!

Welcome new members Nick Breen-Kurvcsev and Geoff Barden and Family.

Oh, and any of you that had a piece of that fabulous “Oat Meal” slice would know that you had to go back for seconds. Thankyou to member Kathryn Lape, who last month paddled in the distance race, being her first time in the ocean and has now shown us that she is quite handy in the kitchen. I’m sure we all welcome her with open arms and bellies!

I heard the April comp will have some great waves!

February 2011 wrap up

The first event for 2011 has been a HUGE SUCCESS .... Sunday morning dawned with no wind, bright skies and very warm. The air held a promise of doing one thing and one thing only, getting hotter. What a fantastic day for a paddle of a mere 10 kilometers from the peeling rights of Snapper Rocks all the way across to the tranquil waters of the Currumbin Estuary. By 8.30am, a crowd of 30 paddlers had been sorted into their respective distance categories being either the 10km or 5km, and we were off for the 15 minutes drive to Snapper Rocks (or Tugun as the case may be).

Wasn't much time to available to admire the great line up of different boards laid out on the grass at Snapper as the Prez soon had everyone organised and off to the most southerly shark buoy on the Gold Coast shark nets to assemble in an orderly fashionable starting line. It was decided that it might be best to send Macca out first to the buoy just to make sure nothing in a grey suit was lurking around out there and everyone was re assured to see that he sat happily on his board for two minutes, with his legs dangling over the side with no signs of ill effect. So we all proceeded to that supposedly orderly starting line. A quick one minute staging which allowed some of the more sneaky paddlers to inch forward (or meter forward as the case may be Steveo) and we were off, all 20 of us. And straight off we were, straight into a pod of dolphins who seemed to be heralding something, it would turn out they were trying to tell us "Hey Guys and Girls, do you know how hot you are going to get over the next hour or so"?

As this was all going on, under the expert direction of Alison “Ali Cat” Fullager, a small number of fun paddlers set off from Tugun for their 5km paddle back to Currumbin. It wouldn't be too long before they would also be joined my "Just Like” Mike Manning and Mark “Lacey” Waldeck leading another group of fun paddlers who wanted to complete the 10km paddle but not at the break neck speed occurring 1 kilometer out to sea. The group had a blast, encountering schools of fish or all sizes and the odd occasional wave or two that made things a little more interesting. Huge kudos goes to new member Kathryn Lape who completed the 5 klm paddle on her new SUP, and also being first time beyond the break ever. Evidently the smile on Kathryn's face at the finish was unable to be removed for the next 48 hours. And another huge effort by the “Frenchman” Vincie Dumarski, beating his PB by more than 15 minutes. He was soon whisked away for a urine sample!

Back out to sea, the pack had stretched out now as they approached Elephant Rock and for the turn back into the creek. After going that hard for that long in that heat, all that you wanted to do was hit that creek water and finish. Then it hits you, the sight of 1000 people crowded onto the small but beautiful waves at the Alley means you will have to paddle just that little bit further north to successfully navigate the entrance to Currumbin Creek.  Finally all paddlers were back in, safe and certainly somewhat less sound than they were about an hour and a bit ago.

A massive thanks goes out to all of our water safety and our instructional helpers. They are Mike “Like Mike” Manning, Mark “Lacey” Waldeck, Chris “Chambers” Chamberlin, Alison “Ali Cat” Fullager and Steve “VP” Richardson, and also to the guys who supplied trailers and transport to and from Snapper Rocks. Cheers!

Hopefully we have everyone accounted for in the table as the distance times and placings record sheet looks like a doctor has entered the info in.

Next event is our first surfing round and it is smack middle at the end of the Cyclone season so we should hopefully see some of Queensland's (and Australia's for that matter) hottest SUP surfers battle it out for the glory that is the "smelly coconut!!!!"
